Why Learn English Language?

Argumentative Essay – Why learn English language

English Language is taught in many schools all over the world and as a result many people can speak the language. I believe that people should continue to learn the English language as it is spoken in many countries both as a native tongue and as a second language. Being able to speak English can be seen as an asset if someone wished to go to another country to work or live.

One reason for my argument is that people who wish to work in an English speaking country will find it easier to find a job, and will usually be able to obtain a higher paid job. If someone is looking for a high paid job in technical innovation or economical development then speaking English would be an asset as the United States is the leader in these fields.

English is one of the most commonly spoken languages in the world due to the colonial age when Great Britain expanded its empire. English speaking countries include Australia, Canada, America, New Zealand, India, Africa, Jamaica and other small islands. English is also one of the most commonly learnt second languages in Europe. Knowing English will allow many people of different native languages to communicate and break down communication barriers.

Some people may feel that English speakers should be the ones to learn another language, which should be considered. However, if everyone learnt a different language there would be a barrier. That is why I think that it would be best for the world to agree on one second language which everyone must learn to a degree.

If someone wished to peruse a career in the film industry, or had a great passion for films, then speaking English will mean that they no longer have to rely on subtitles and can enjoy the film as it was intended. English is also the language of science, this means that if someone had an interest in science or wished to have a career in it then learning English is a must.

People should remember that English is a fairly easy language to learn, compared to Chinese for example. This is because the English language is based on an alphabet and not signs and symbols.

If someone was wishing to move to an English speaking country to work then being bilingual and able to speak English will benefit their career. In the United States people who are able to speak the native language are more likely to earn better money, have more job prospects and have a greater standard of living.

I believe that if everyone in the world learnt the same language, such as English then it would be much easier to communicate with people all over the world. We would be able to learn a lot about each other cultures and life experiences as we will not have a language barrier. I also feel that people should continue to learn the English language in order to keep their opportunities open should they wish to move away to work.
